The Merrill Amateur Radio Group (formerly Southern Lincoln County Area
Amateur Radio Association) is participating in the 49th annual Jamboree On
The Air-a special event for the Boy and Girl Scouts of America in Merrill
on October 21 and 22 sponsored by the Scouts and American Radio Relay
League. This yearly event is an opportunity for Boy and Girl Scouts to
learn about the amateur radio hobby and talk to other scouts on the radio
while working toward Merit Badges and special recognition.
This event is one part of the goals and aspirations MARG set forth upon
forming: to promote the amateur radio hobby/service through educational
opportunities in the community. Along with radio operation, there will be
opportunities for scouts to try their hand at Morse Code, making homebrew
antennas, and learning that radio has no boundaries when it comes to
learning and meeting new people from all points of the world.
N9S will be on the air on or near the designated JOTA frequencies of
3.740/3.940, 7.270, 14.290, 18.140, 21.360, 29.460, and 28.390 MHz SSB,
and/or 3.590, 7.030, 14.070, 183080, 21.140, 24.910, and 28.190 MHz CW. We
will also be using the 145.190- KX2DX repeater in Merrill for local
contacts and the W9GLG EchoLink node #198118 on the 443.325 KA9HQE repeater
for other contacts. Operation will begin at about 9:00 a.m. local time on
October 21 and 22 and will end about 6:00 p.m. both days.
I can't stress enough how important events like this are when it comes to
promoting the hobby and attracting young and old alike to the hobby. This
is a golden opportunity to spark the light of interest in amateur radio for
